Before signing a lease or investing heavily in a location, determine which licensing, registration, or exemption rules apply to your program. Review capacity, ratios, supervision, building, training, and health and safety requirements.
Estimate your startup expenses, enrollment capacity, tuition rates, payroll, rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, food, supplies, software, taxes, and cash reserves. Determine how many enrolled children you need to cover expenses.
Choose your business structure, register the business as required, obtain applicable tax identification numbers, establish business banking, and review insurance and local business requirements.
Confirm zoning and childcare use before committing to a property. Your location may also need to satisfy fire, building, health, occupancy, indoor space, outdoor play, parking, sanitation, and accessibility requirements.
Collect required applications, policies, floor plans, emergency plans, inspections, background checks, training records, director qualifications, and other documentation requested by your licensing authority.
Plan staffing around required child-to-staff ratios and group sizes. Complete required background checks, orientation, health and safety training, CPR or First Aid, and other state-required qualifications before employees begin unsupervised work.
Prepare policies covering tuition, enrollment, attendance, authorized pickup, illness, medication, discipline, emergencies, family communication, incidents, meals, staff expectations, and other everyday operations.
Set up developmentally appropriate classrooms, secure records, emergency supplies, sanitation procedures, safe sleep practices where applicable, playground procedures, and systems for attendance and child supervision.
Finalize tuition, enrollment forms, family agreements, billing, payment collection, classroom assignments, staff schedules, communication systems, and opening-day procedures.
Plan for licensing fees, property costs, renovations, equipment, insurance, staffing, supplies, marketing, and operating reserves.
